Xmas Shopping Music

The lovely folk at four23 hired our gospel singers to pull those nervous xmas shoppers in for a bit of retail therapy, or just giving to loved ones (depending on your point of view)....as always, the singers scored a hit in the chilly December weather and brought some festive cheer as only great live music can!

We had a great Xmas, with the lovely people at Google employing our electric violin and turntables duo for their new office opening at Level 4, in Belgrave House in London. See the picture for their cool surroundings, without the need for any extra backdrop.

Thanks to Stephen Rosenthal for hiring us - it was a pleasure to meet you and the very friendly and nice people from Google. We had fun, and Naomi commented that is was the 1st time ever that a client had helped her and Matt take down at the end of the night. She was very happy about this!

As well as that, we provided live gospel singers for Ron Dennis, and also outside Addidas, Covent Garden, played in a beautiful Christmas wedding at the Cavalry and Guards Club, a charity event in Brick Lane, and a Christmas party for Black Sun in Fulham Palace - to name a few of our events. The 20s theme and its fashion continues with Duncan and his guys doing a great prohibition set in their own suave way.

Our Gospel Singers are singing in High Wycombe today. It is an event organsied by Janssen-Cilag and Johnson and Johnson in aid of Positively UK for World Aids Day. 9 singers and a keyboard player will bring the venue alive with their superb singing.

We are delighted and honoured to be involved with this event, and hope that the auctions bring in much money for this incredibly important charity.

Here is Songae, one of our excellent violinists, playing at Jenny Baines' wedding in London in August. Solo violin, cello or harp is a great choice for sheer simplicity and purity of music at a wedding.

As we are now taking bookings for Christmas parties, we have added a superb new corporate entertainment act - ideal for corporate entertainment - which is a rock'n'roll trip into a great era of music. The summer was manic with a host of multiple-booked weddings, where we offered a string quartet, jazz band and covers band to the same clients, so taking care of all their musical wedding requirements.
It was our busiest summer yet - over 50 weddings in August, and great fun trying to get all the gospel singers, string quartets, guitarists, harpists etc. all arranged and ready to play.
We have 2 great new acts on the site. Duncan, a brilliant jazz clarinet player, who also plays sax and flute, with his duo or trio - have a look at this superb jazz band for hire. Jazz band (duo or trio) is great for smaller weddings, corporate events, parties and many other types of event. Duncan is a cheerful character and wants his music to bring a smile to anyone listening. Have a listen to the sound clips to get an idea of this swinging, toe-tapping music.

Also new to the site is Liquid Opera, a collection of lovely ladies (and if needed, one guy to balance proceedings!) with amazing opera voices, whose show will blow you away. Recent events include a host of weddings and also last wednesday we provided a string quartet for the Sunday Times Green Business Awards in The Roof Gardens, Kensington. The event was excellent, and we had a fab night!

May has seen erratic weather and lots of gigs - including Tom at The Langham, Louisa and a String Trio in The Caledonian Club, Julilan and his jazz band in the park (Paddington Recreation Ground - see photo), Gospel Singers in Luton Hoo Hotel, a Wedding String Quartet in Stationers Hall and The Roof Gardens - and much more.

We also provided a string quartet in Regents Park for Regent's College, an academic graduation ceremony where the string quartet turned into a Karaoke band, as students and lecturers began singing along to the likes of 'Angels' and 'Sweet Dreams are made of These'.

String Quartet, trio, duo or solo?
This is a question I often get asked for weddings, but also private parties.
We have just made a promo video which is currently being edited and should be on the site and Youtube soon which has all these combinations to help anyone decide.

In general, I'd say -

- If budget is not an issue, go for string quartet. There is more music available, it makes the most complete sound, and it looks right.

- If music is purely background and more for the nice spectacle and atmosphere, then trio is fine. String trio will often use the best quartet music with a part left out. This missing part is not always essential, and there is a lovely sound still from a trio.

- If you want a less expensive option, string duo is fine. It is more effective for intimate occasions - ie small, low-key weddings, private birthday or dinner parties, etc. The sound is a bit thin, but still pleasant. It has an intimacy that makes up in part for the smaller sound.

- If you want to be a bit different, solo string player is a nice idea. Fewer people book them, but solo violin or solo cello are effective. They're not quite as good for famous songs. Whilst you could play 'Every Breath You Take' for string quartet or even trio, it would sound wrong on solo violin or solo cello. I personally prefer solo cello, (even though I'm a violinist!) - but there is a romance in solo violin, and I've spoken to quite a few brides who are somewhat in love with the idea.

Whatever your thoughts, please feel free to let me know any ideas of unusual music that appeals to you - I'm always interested in new ideas for live event music.

Wedding String Quartet

We have a host of brilliant wedding string quartets to hire and are currently getting some great new arrangements of songs to add to our repertoire, including Chasing Cars, Crazy by Gnarls Barkley, Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics and much more.

Although the majority of wedding string quartets are hired and booked during January, February and March - there are always last minute requets - and with so many professional string players available, we love to step in and get it together at the last minute. So far we have provided brilliant musicians and bands to hire for more than 500 events when the brief was 'find the music fast - the event is tomorrow or in a few days time'....it's a great challenge to get the right people at the last minute and we love to work through our contact list and grab someone who is still available.

String quartets for hire are also avaialble for all other kinds of events, including engagement parties, marriage proposals, corporate entertainment and many more. If the weather improves, we'll be doing many more outdoor events. Forthcoming events include Paddington Recreation Ground bowling green opening and a string quartet for University Ceremony Awards in Regents Park.

Visit London Awards and More

We have just provided a great string quartet for the Visit London Awards at Westfield Shopping Centre. The piece was by Marc 01, who is a tenori-on expert. For those not aware (I, for one was not), this is a Yamaha instrument that looks and sounds very futuristic. You get some idea from the photo here. We played a straight version of Beethoven's 5th through microphones at the very start of the evening. Half way through, the beats kicked in, and the tenori-ons appeared. It was great fun, and we enjoyed working for SML Events - who were a lovely bunch of people, and created a great event!

Other unusual events were a recent Faroe Islands fashion event in Digitaria, Soho - where I played some highly unsual music by Sunleif Rasmussen. It was great, and whoever says people in fashion are superficial can eat their words. I've played this kind of music before - and usually, audiences cannot handle it for longer than a couple of minutes. I was amazed that these guys actually watched, as if it was a concert. Humanity faith-restoring stuff indeed.

Wedding string quartets are still hard at work, with December bringing weddings in Marble Hill House, Richmond - and Great Fosters Hotel, Twickenham - to name but two.

And the string section for Liquid Strings is hard at work with more concerts for Ioannis's Doxa Deo Church. We are looking forward to this, and on the same night, Julian and his jazz trio are perfroming at Radisson Edwardian Hotel, Bloomsbury Street. And we haven't even started the Xmas rush yet (sorry I mentioned the X word....)

New artists for Liquid Strings inculde a fantastic cello and dancer act, (perfect corporate entertainment for Christmas parties), a wonderful Big Band for hire and an amazing new gospel choir, who really have to be seen to be believed - but are amazing singers. October 'Green Shoots'

We are working like crazy to provide the right people for the events that you require. I am not convinced by the idea of 'green shoots'. I keep reading and hearing different points of view, but we have had to tackle the recession and the lack of overflowing budgets with smaller, bespoke options.
Not everyone requires such smaller bookings. In December, we are providing a string section for hire for 2 events held by Doxa Deo Church in London. One will be in Wimbledon, and one in Stratford Picture House. We love this, as playing miked up with a great band is a refreshing change from the standard classical music we often play. It is always a highly enthusiastic service, and led by the excellent singing and keyboard playing of Ioannis Dekas. We hope to get some film footage to put on the site as well this time.
Apart from this, we've provided Julian's solo guitar hire for several weddings, and over the summer in association with Courtneys at Paddington Recreation Park there were some fantastic duos including the brilliant corporate entertainment from Liquid Strings electric violin and keyboards/turntables Matt and Naomi. If a string quartet sounds a bit much, a string trio for hire can be excellent, and see the photo of Brian, Victoria and Stefano entertaining the guests at Putteridge Bury Conference Centre at Nick and Kelly Booth's wedding.

Apart from that, the weather has been lovely - we've provided music for some late September barbeques, and had a few private ones ourselves. It may be clinging to the last moments of summer, but why not? I visited Lastovo in Croatia during August, taking a break from business for a couple of weeks. It's a tiny and beautiful island on the Adriatic, south of Dubrovnik. Absolutely stunning place, even if you don't have a yacht (which I don't - yet...). Ok, the wine is not great, but the seafood is amazing, and the atmosphere is that of an unspoilt paradise, (and it does not cost as much as many other 'paradises'). Don't take my word for it, go yourself.

My tip for getting a new phone if you want to avoid the constant hype of iPhones, is get a HTC touch pro 2 with Vodafone. It's great if you do business, and want ease of use.

Michelle and 3 of the lovely ladies from the Liquid Strings Gospel Singers roused the already lively crowd at the Secret Cinema event in the Coronet Theatre on Saturday 20th. These great gospel singers for hire were an amazing addition to what looked like an amazing night, full of colourful characters and a carnival feel taking over the Elephant and Castle venue.

On the same night, the wonderful Djanan and Turkish musicians were bringing a Turkish theme to a 50th birthday party. The whole party theme was Turkish, so Liquid Strings sourced a brilliant belly dancer as well - Hannah - who brought exactly the right ambiance with her elegant, poised dancing - working well with Djanan, with whom she's worked several times before. New page on the site for the fantastic Julian - solo guitarist for hire. Julian has been playing in several events for Liquid Strings recently. His combination of classical, Baroque, Spanish and jazz guitar make him a fine choice for weddings, parties and all kinds of other events.
He recently played at a wedding and ended up accompanying one of the bridesmaids in singing Somewhere over the Rainbow. It's this kind of versatility that marks him out a player of choice for events. He plays through a small amp to be heard in different settings and during the credit crunch can make a perfect choice for those with budgetary constraints (whilst not being too cheap!)

MUSIC FOR EVENTS TIPS/IDEAS

Small is beautiful!

During the recession, we have been offering our clients budget-busting alternatives that still look and sound fantastic.

For example, if the event is not that large and you cannot afford to book a string quartet, why not book a string duo? The combination of violin and cello looks great, and most essentially, it sounds great as well. It can sound as good as a string trio, but is of course cheaper!

A solo musician doesn't have to be an expensive harpist (and if the harpist is not expensive, beware!). It can be a more economical cellist, jazz or classical guitarist.

An amplified function band can be exorbitant, but if you're looking for a cheaper alternative for live, amplified music for events, ask us about our jazz bands. Some of the combinations (ie trio with female singer) can be very reasonable and flexible in their fees.

Our string duo played in Carvosso's for a 60th Birthday on Sat 28th. It went superbly well, and up and coming events include providing a string section for hire in a concert in Raynes Park, as well as more weddings.
We have also recently had Eva playing in a wedding at the beautiful church in Ely Place - St Etheldreda. Solo flute for weddings is a lovely pure sound - well worth using for a small, intimate event, which this event was. Another lovely wedding choice is solo guitar hire.

This combination is becoming more popular with us, especially for those without the budget for a string quartet. I am covering a lot of these with great new cellist, Magda - as violin and cello string duo is an ideal combination for weddings, parties, corporate events, product launches and many other kinds of events.
Liquid Strings is more than happy to cater for smaller budgets. If times are tough, that's no reason not to have live music - but we understand that booking an entire gospel choir during a recession is not a fantastic idea for most, so we would recommend smaller combinations, such as jazz solo artists, string duo for wedding and solo guitar.

Recession means there is belt tightening from most - the demand has been for less musicians per event. So, duos and soloists are suddenly in demand. The imagination of people inquiring creates new possible duos. We were just about to provide a violin and cello duo for a surprise 60th Birthday Party, when the unexpected snow intruded on plans - and it was postponed until March.
March also brings a wedding in London - and the bride has asked for a solo flute for the wedding . We are happy to oblige, and Eva will be playing Mozart, Pachelbel and Delibes for the happy couple on their very special day. So there has been less demand for string quartets for weddings and events. Although we do have some advance bookings for July and December - organised people who know what music they want.

We have been getting bookings for string duo for weddings and events, more than ever before. It is a lovely choice for smaller events, an elegant sound and looks good also. It also doesn't decimate the budget, which is clearly a factor of concern for most at the moment. If the combination is violin and cello, then you have the simplicity of a beautiful melody line on the violin with the cello to accompany it. It is surprising that not more music was specifically written for this combination, since it sounds so lovely.
Given a larger budget, we would definitely recommend a gospel choir for an event - a gospel choir for a wedding or a gospel choir for a corporate event. We have 3 different gospel choirs for events, and they are all seasoned professionals with incredible vocal abilities! It is an entirely uplifting, joyous sound and will make people smile.

It is a period of booking musicians for weddings in London and beyond. We are getting most of our inquiries for string quartet hire for weddings in London, and for string duos in weddings - possibly as a result of the economic situation - since string quartets are usually a more common request.
String duos or even trios for hire in weddings are also great choices. I played myself for a London wedding last year with Cat on cello, and the simple combination of violin and cello was an effective one - as there is lots of good music, and the simplicity of violin and cello duo in a wedding reception or a wedding ceremony can sound really lovely.

We also have a great covers band for weddings in London and the surrounding regions, who can play loads of great hits - current and oldies, which can provide the right atmosphere to get people dancing and celebrating in the way that only a live band can really do. It has been a fun year, and challenging to meet the credit crunch budget for music in events. Although some clients have played it save with a standard string quartet, demand has risen for jazz bands hire in London, especially Jules and his jazz swing band and Phil and his cool trio with fantastic female vocalists. It's a stylish choice that covers both background and isn't too loud to discourage conversation, but can also get guests dancing and moving. Versatile, and the jazz bands for hire from Liquid Strings are chosen for their wide repertoire and experience in playing great jazz/swing music in all kinds 0f events - corporate and private.

We are also getting a lot more demand for the medieval musicians and the gospel singers - both completely different, but both similarly eye-catching and unusual as music for events. Gospel singers can provide a funky, upbeat and big live sound to any event - their powerful voices mean that they can sing without PA, unless the venue is so big and the number of guests so large, it is essential.

Liquid Strings has been very busy with a reception at London Transport Museum, with an amplified string trio setting the tone for the reception put on by the US Embassy in London. Thanks to the sound engineer from Acoustic Solutions, the Liquid Strings trio could be heard above the buzz of the event. Music ranged from Amazing Grace to Cole Porter and Scott Joplin, with some Vivaldi and Mozart as well.
We have also just provided a string quartet at The Reform Club on Pall Mall, and in this busy weekend are providing live gospel singers for hire in Tommy Hilfiger's flagship store on Regent Street, as well as a live string quartet in a West London community event, that will be the first (brave/crazy) attempt at playing outdoors in December!

Pride of Britain was a fun event. Our quartet was appreciated by the guests, with Sir Michael Caine apparently raving about how good we were, Cat Deeley saying we were brilliant and Bruce Forsyth calling Katie great after he asked her to play 'I got rhythm' in B flat and without a pause, she did exactly that.

The main reason why everyone could hear us is because the sound people at ITV put contact microphones on our instruments. This is worth noting if you are planning an event. If you are having a sit down dinnner in a large space and you book an acoustic string quartet for the event, they will be seen by many, but only heard by those close to the table (unless no one talks to each other or drinks any wine!). I have provided musicians for many events and suggested providing a sound engineer and PA system as well - but people have thought it too much hassle and extra expense. Otherwise, it is worth considering amplification of some kind. This is even more the case with medieval musicians, whose authentic medieval instruments sound beautiful, but very soft at times. Although at least here, they can wander around tables 'minstrel style' and still be heard like this. A string quartet for hire cannot do this. They have to stay close to one another to play in time and see/hear each other.

Anyway, we are now working towards some private screenings of the new James Bond film, with a string duo playing Bond tunes in the pre screening drinks, a medieval themed party in Knightsbridge and many other interesting and fun projects.

One of the best quartets from Liquid Strings will be entertaining the worthy award winners, celebrities and Prime Minister whilst they dine at the pre show dinner in the ITV studios for this years Pride of Britain. We continue to support Pride of Britain by providing excellent musicians, and we are looking forward to playing some light, entertaining choices to help relax the nervous ones who will making their first appearances on national television.
